On Frotteurism
Frotteurism is an avant garde artistic
movement whose works consist of rubbings, usually brass or stone rubbings, but
others may involve the artist’s pelvis or chest. These artistic works are
exhibited to non-consenting viewers for gratification of the artist’s ego. An
artist who practices frotteurism is known as a frotteur, although they have also been
referred to as a poseur. The majority of frotteurs are male. The majority of victims are art
snobs, although other victims include unsuspecting tourists, unwilling friends
(of the artist), casual passersby and art students. This activity is often done
in circumstances where the victim cannot easily respond or leave. For instance,
Frotteurist shows often occur in public places, such as crowded art galleries or
concert halls, although some have been known to occur in parks, train stations or
windows overlooking busy streets.
